FAQ

back
Q: Do your split-system units come pre-gassed?
A: Yes, all Domain Air split system air conditioners come pre-gassed with either R410a or R22 refrigerant gas. The standard gas charge can support up to a 5m pipe run. If your installation requires more than 5m of pipe between the indoor and outdoor unit your installer may need to add refrigerant gas accordingly.

Q: Can I use my portable air conditioner straight away?
A: No, Domain Air recommends portable air conditioners to stand upright for 24 hours after being transported. This is because the oil can accumulate within the air conditioner in an area outside of the compressor (motor) leaving crucial components without enough oil and at high risk of damage. Warranty may be void if all efforts have not been taken to give the unit 24 hours standing time before use.

Q: Can I buy a cooling only split system or portable air conditioner?
A: All Domain Air split systems and portable air conditioners have heating and cooling. There is no difference in production costs for a system with heating and cooling therefore all Domain Air units are made this way. If the heating function is not required then think of it as an emergency heating system if your other heating system fails.

Q: Can I install my split system by myself?
A: Unless you are a qualified air conditioner installer this is not recommended and can void your warranty. All Domain Air split systems must be installed by qualified air conditioner installers.

Q: Can i pick up my item from Domain Air?
A: You are welcome to pick up your item from our warehouse. We are located at 2 / 9 Kelletts rd in Rowville Victoria. We are open from 9.00am-5.30pm Monday to Friday and some Saturdays. You are also welcome to pay on pick up. If you have any questions feel free to contact us.

Q: What does my split system air conditioner come with?
A: Your split system air conditioner comes with everything that is required for installation except for interconnect wiring and copper pipes although it is fairly common practice for installers to supply these items.

Q: Does my air conditioner come with a remote control?
A: All Domain Air split systems, Ducted air conditioning systems and portable air conditioners come with a remote control. If you don't receive a remote control with your air conditioner please contact us

Q: How much will it cost to deliver my air conditioner?
A: Delivery costs can vary depending on the delivery destination and the item to be sent. You can calculate your delivery cost here. If you have any questions feel free to contact us

Q: Can i buy a custom length of copper pipe?
A: You are welcome to order a custom length of copper pipe although you will need to contact us directly on 03 9763 8988 to make an order. The minimum length we can provide is 5m. Feel free to call us for prices and any other information you need.

Q: Where can i find an air conditioner installer?
A: Qualified air conditioner installers can sometimes be difficult to find. You are welcome to have a look at our find an installer page where you may be able to find an air conditioner / split system installer in your local area. Most installers are prepared to travel some distance to perform installations. If you are unable to find an air conditioner installer on our find an installer page you can try either the Yellow pages or your local newspaper to potentially find an air conditioner / split system installer. If you need further assistance finding an air conditioner installer in your local area you are welcome to contact us or call us on 03 9763 8988 and any of our friendly staff will be happy to help you.

Q: Can I leave windows and doors open while my air conditioning system is operating?
A: Windows and doors can be left open, although it is not a good idea if you are trying to heat or cool your room. When you are trying to cool down a room, it is recommended to close all windows, curtains and blinds throughout the hottest part of the day. If you practice this it will help to keep your house cooler and your air conditioner will benefit from not having to work as hard to achieve the target temperature.

Q: Can Legionella be caused by a home air conditioner or split system?
A: Legionella is not something you can contract from domestic / household air conditioning. The majority of Legionella cases are usually caused by maintaining cooling towers incorrectly. Cooling towers are predominantely used in commercial air conditioning systems. The cooling towers are used to cool water condensers and in industries to cool recirculated water.

Q: Should i have the thermostat on my air conditioner set to "auto" or should i have it set to "on"
A: Most air conditioners have an "auto" setting on the thermostat. This setting makes the fan operate only when the temperature requires it. This is generally the most used and energy efficient setting because programmable thermostats have the ability to maintain a steady temperature therefore reducing energy usage by only working when required.

Q: Can I lower energy consumption while operating the air conditioning unit?
A: If you close curtains, blinds, windows and doors, you can significantly help your air conditioner cool a room more effectively and use less energy. Air conditioners with inverters and "auto" settings are generally more energy effifcient as they automatically adapt and maintain the desired temperature you require.

Q: Should I cover the outdoor unit in winter?
A: Outdoor units are manufactured to withstand seasonal changes so they do not need to be covered. In fact is is recommended that the outdoor unit remains uncovered at all times. The heat pumps inside air conditioners are designed to operate all year round and if you cover them, it may cause damage and potentially void your warranty.

Q: Can shrubs or plants be planted around or near the outdoor unit?
A: Plants and shrubs can be planted near the air conditioners outdoor unit although, you should make sure there is plenty of room around the outdoor unit. Air must be able to flow freely in and out of it. If there is not significant room for air circulation, the outdoor unit can overheat and sustain major damage. It is also a good idea to keep all plants, shrubs and limbs trimmed back because they can lower the performance of the air conditioner and cause damage if leaves or twigs are sucked into the outdoor unit.

Q: If I need to replace the outdoor unit should I replace the indoor unit also?
A: When a major component of the system fails to operate correctly and cannot be repaired is is recommended in most cases to replace the entire system. The reason for this is because split system air conditioners and heating units are designed to operate as a complete system with matching indoor and outdoor units.

Q: Do air conditioners last for a long time? What is the average life expectancy?
A: A split system air conditioner should generally last about 10 years in a typical household environment. When the air conditioner begins to have more problems that are costly to fix, it may be a good time to consider replacing it.

Q: How do I know what size air conditioner I will need?
A: There are several factors to consider when determining what size air conditioner you require. If you determine the size of the area you wish to heat / cool then one of the friendly Domain Air staff can assist you with finding the best air conditioner to suit your needs. Feel free to call us on 03 9763 8988 or send us an email on the contact us page for assistance with air conditioner sizes.

Q: How much will it cost to install my split system / ducted air conditioning system?
A: Installation costs can vary quite substantially depending on the job. If you would like to get a quote for installation you can request an installation quote for free on our Free Installation Quote page and an installer will contact you to provide you with a quote for installation.

Q: Do you supply air conditioner installation accessories?
A: A full range of installation accessories are available. Choose from the accessories including wall brackets, pipe duct, floor supports, end caps, elbows, external corners, polyslab, and roof brackets. Some of the accessories can be found on the air conditioner accessories page.
